Every October, we celebrate Farm to School Month — a national movement that feels especially close to home here in Alaska. At Alaska Food Co., this month marks a milestone worth celebrating: over 20,000 pounds of locally grown Alaska food distributed to schools across the state this year.

From Palmer to Bethel, Nome to Fairbanks, our mission is simple — connect Alaska’s farms to Alaska’s classrooms. By working directly with local growers, producers, and distributors, we help ensure students have access to fresh, nutritious, Alaska-grown ingredients on their lunch trays.

This program is more than logistics — it’s about legacy. When schools buy local, they’re investing in:

  • Local farmers: Keeping food dollars circulating within our communities

  • Food security: Strengthening Alaska’s independent, sustainable food supply

  • Education: Teaching students where their food really comes from — and why that matters

Our team at Alaska Food Co. coordinates packaging, freezing, and distribution to make farm-to-school programs easy to access and sustainable year-round.

When a student bites into a potato grown in Palmer or a carrot from Delta Junction, they’re not just eating — they’re learning what Alaska can grow and how their community feeds them.

This Farm to School Month, we’re celebrating every farmer, school nutrition team, and student who helps feed the 49th with pride and purpose.

If your school or farm wants to get involved, reach out! Let’s keep growing together.
